Queer, Jamaican-inspired, hip-hop artist big Dipper (try to picture it) dropped the official video to his debut single ‘Drip Drop’. The Bambi-sampled track was described to us as ‘fresh, funny and RAUNCHY and totally our style.’ well big Dipper, you got it right! I don’t think we could have described it more aptly ourselves. Drip Drop is fun, dirty, but above all, well made and enjoyable to listen to. big Dipper raps with the wit of Cazwell/Andy Samberg but with the hardness of Nicki Minaj and Kanye. give it two listen-throughs and you’ll be humming the hook for weeks.
Tripped Media spoke with the Chicago based artist about his single and more upcoming work for 2012… enjoy.
TM: When we see big Dipper we see Nicki Minaj meets, Sean Paul, meets Andy Samberg. Who’s/what’s your inspiration?
BD: I LOVE Nicki Minaj. She’s one of the reasons I first picked up the mic for real. I grew up listening to hip hop music and was always drawn to the nastiest lyrics. 6th grade was all about Too Short for me.
Kanye will always do it for me too. his music is incomparable.
How long have you been on the Rap scene? what made you start?
I’ve been rapping since high school, but never anything serious.
About a year ago I was fucking around with some of my friends, and we came up with the hook for Drip Drop. to them it was a joke, to me it was the beginning. I called up my friend and music producer Dan Foley and we got to work right away.
WE LOVE ‘DRIP DROP’! How was it working on the set? was there any good drama? Who hooked up with who?
Making the music video was dope. no drama, just work. We shot for 3 days over the summer and had amazing support and tons of extras and performers to make the video as stimulating as possible. The director, Tobin Del Cuore, and I collaborated on everything and we self-produced the whole thing with funding from a Kickstarter campaign.
We shot a ton of footage, but also just played around and had a good time. Lots of booty popping, ass dropping, and WURKING. The woodland creatures know how to get it done.
If you could hook up with any other rapper who would it be and why?
Cazwell. I would love to work with him. I think he’s super sexy and I’m really into his music. He knows what he’s doing, and seems to always be having a good time.
You’ve got a lot of things going for you… Gay, bear, Jamaican-style, white-rapper- how’s the reception been?
I’m from Chicago and the support here has been amazing. We had some private screenings of the video at bars and friends’ houses and everyone has been asking to be in the next one. And the internet is a crazy place. I put the video up on youtube and have been getting tons of messages and tweets from fans all over the country. It’s super dope.
What else can we expect from you BD? can we call you BD?
Call me BD all you want. I like the sound of that. I’m working on new music everyday, writing lyrics as fast as I can. I’ve got a new song called MEAT QUOTIENT that I’m working on with Dan Foley. and I have a couple other things in the works: a remake of a classic, and track that gives a little insight into the day to day of big Dipper.
Hopefully I’ll have an EP out by the summer.
Any plans to come to NYC?
I’m moving to NYC this summer, so I might be traveling east before that to check things out. I’m itching to play gigs outside of Chicago.
