1317696371 15 Hornets rally to win in overtime over Mustangs

When Midland Valley quarterback Bobby Brown couldn’t hit a receiver on fourth-and-goal from the 5, Aiken’s miracle score stood up. “We had too many penalties, turnovers, missed assignments and were lackadaisical on defense,” said Aiken coach Carey Johnson, before adding with a smile, “but it’s a lot better to learn from mistakes from a win than a loss.” the Hornets (2-1) fell behind almost before Midland Valley’s band was finished playing the national anthem. After placekicker Robert Holmes’ opening boot went into the end zone for a touchback, the Mustangs (0-3) started from their own 20. They only needed one play to score, as running back Trey Walker took a handoff, ran up the middle and sprinted 80 yards for a touchdown – just 12 seconds into the game. that turned out to be the only points of the first half. Both teams had success running the ball, but not enough to compensate for anemic passing attacks. Chestnut was 0-for-3 passing in the first half, while Brown didn’t attempt a pass until 4:10 was left on the clock in the fourth quarter. “We need to throw the ball more,” Brown said after the game when his only completion was for five yards in overtime. “We can’t run it the whole game.” Although the passing game was next to non existent, Midland Valley held the lead until the fourth quarter thanks to a tremendous effort by its defense. Linebacker Jamaree Drayton seemed to spend as much time in Aiken’s backfield in the first half as Chestnut. he and defensive lineman Justin Gray both finished the game with 1¬½ sacks and several tackles for loss. the Hornets finally broke through on their first possession of the second half. Running back Devontai Pope capped off a seven-play scoring drive with an 8-yard touchdown run. Aiken was still down a point, since the Mustangs converted a 2-point attempt on Walker’s opening score. the Hornets were soon down by seven points. That’s because Midland Valley scored after recovering the first of two lost fumbles by Pope. Working on a short field, Drayton completed a three-play, 29-yard drive with a 4-yard touchdown run. Aiken was just down seven because the point-after kick by Ben Padgett banged off the left upright. the Hornets seemed on the verge of tying the score early in the fourth quarter. Chestnut and Pope, the key cogs for Aiken all night, engineered a drive that led them into the red zone. but Pope, who rushed for 96 yards on 20 carries, lost his second fumble at the 10-yard line. the mistake didn’t haunt Aiken this time, because the Hornets’ defense rose to the occasion. They adjusted to Midland Valley’s one-dimensional offense and shut the Mustangs down the rest of the way. “The defense made incredible stops,” said Chestnut, who tied the game with a 1-yard touchdown run on Aiken’s next possession. it capped off five-play, 58-yard drive and the biggest play came when Chestnut connected with Purnell for a 42-yard gain on third-and-11. Chestnut finished the game with 103 yards rushing and 111 passing. Aiken botched a snap at the end of regulation, which prevented Holmes from attempting a potential 36-yard game-winning touchdown. and it lost 33 yards on the first three plays of overtime on a mishandled snap, a holding penalty and a sack. but it just set the stage for Chestnut’s miracle pass. “That was one we had to dig out of our hat,” said Johnson, who will start to prepare his team for Richland Northeast. He’ll do so after finding out the status of senior Quinton Smith, who was carried off the field in a stretcher early in the second half. he lay motionless and was taken to the hospital, but he was reportedly moving. “We’re praying everything’s OK with Quinton Smith and we’ll go from there,” Johnson said. things don’t get any easier for Midland Valley. the Mustangs travel to play undefeated Silver Bluff next week. “We’ve just got to practice harder and do better,” Brown said of the Mustangs, who are in search of their first win.  AIKEN 20, MIDLAND VALLEY 14 (Overtime) AIK    0 0 7 7 6 – 20 MV    8 0 6 0 0 – 14 SCORING SUMMARY FIRST QUARTER MV–Trey Walker 80-yard run. 1317692756 70 Defendant pleads guilty to second degree murder

a Leavenworth man has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. Bobby K. Brown, 22, entered his plea Tuesday in Leavenworth County District Court. He also pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary and aggravated assault. the charges stem from a Feb. 14 incident in Leavenworth that resulted in the shooting death of Stephen Knox-Brune. Brown had been charged with felony murder, which is a form of first-degree murder that occurs when a person is killed during the commission of a felony. the charge was amended to second-degree murder as part of a plea agreement between the prosecution and defense. District Judge Gunnar Sundby said Tuesday he was aware family members of the victim did not want the criminal complaint to be amended in the case, but the role of determining charges rests with the prosecution. Family members of Knox-Brune were in the courtroom Tuesday with their attorney, Frank Kohl. Deputy County Attorney John Bryant summarized testimony from an earlier preliminary hearing in order to offer a factual basis for the second-degree murder charge. the prosecutor said an eyewitness had testified that Knox-Brune and Brown struggled over a weapon. “she believed it was an accidental discharge,” Bryant said. the prosecutor said the victim’s family believes the shooting had been premeditated. As part of the plea agreement, Bryant and defense attorney Michael Highland reserve the right to each make his own argument regarding the length of Brown’s sentence. Sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 4. After court, Bryant said he intends to argue for a prison sentence of more than 25 years. the case had been scheduled to go to trial next week. Bryant said if the case had gone to trial, jurors would have had the option of convicting Brown for an alternative charge to felony murder such as manslaughter.
