FERGIE ‘TO BREAK WILL’ OF WENGER Here we go. Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has – according to The Sun – been given ‘the green light to take his summer spending beyond £70million with a £20m bid’ for Sami Nasri. They say Fergie believes he can ‘break the will’ of Wenger, who of course already faces losing Cesc Fabregas this summer. So what was the catalyst for this new resolve? Manchester City getting involved in Nasri, according to The Sun. whether this is 2+2 stuff because Roberto Mancini has given up on Alexis Sanchez, who knows? Meanwhile, the Daily Mirror claims that the arrival of Gervinho could persuade Nasri to stay at the Emirates. Apparently the pair are friends and Nasri rates the Ivory Coast striker highly. Gary cahill is also expected to sign – with Henri Lansbury and Ignasi Miquel going in the opposite direction – while Blackburn’s Chris Samba is also an option if they can find someone who will pay two bob for Sebastien Squillaci. WHAT’S THE MATA, YOU? The general consensus is that Arsenal want Juan Mata to replace Nasri at Arsenal, but the Daily Express claims that Tottenham are also chasing the Valencia winger. we would have thought the Gunners’ biggest problem is that Mata has made it pretty clear he’s not on the market, saying: “I want to win many more trophies and the next title should be one with Valencia next season.” CITY TEST EVERTON ON BAINES Manchester City have spotted that Everton do not have two pennies to rub together and – says the Daily Mirror – are putting together a £20m package for Leighton Baines that would allow them to buy target Charles N’Zogbia. City will allow Everton the pick of their unwanted players, with Emmanuel Adebayor and Craig Bellamy possible solutions to their obvious striker problems, though we suspect the former would baulk at the prospect of joining a mid-table side. BARTON TO ARSENAL Now this is not an entirely new piece of transfer gossip but it’s certainly gathering credence with the People’s claim that ‘ARSENE WENGER is weighing up the most astonishing transfer swoop of the summer…for Joey Barton’. According to them, Wenger ‘has finally accepted the need to inject some bite and experience into his team of perennial underachievers’ and that has led him to Barton, who is available from Newcastle for the knock-down price of £1.5m as Mike Ashley tries to cleanse his squad of high-earners with little sell-on value. Barton has made it clear that he would leave Newcastle for Champions League football. Could Arsenal offer him that Champions League football? it would be sensational and we cannot deny that we would love it to happen. Elsewhere in the People, they claim that Arsenal and Liverpool are both being priced out of a move for Scott Dann by Birmingham’s £12m valuation of the English centre-half without an England cap. BARCA OPEN FABREGAS TALKS There’s been no bid as yet but Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood has admitted that Barcelona have been in contact about Cesc Fabregas. Hill-Wood is quoted in the Sunday Mirror, saying: “Yes, they have spoken to us about Cesc. They have been in touch. But so far they have not made a bid and we do not want to let him go. But he comes from Barcelona so it is understandable if he wanted to go back. However, they have not made an offer so far.” The general consensus is that Arsenal will sell at the right price. But will Barcelona pay the right price? ‘Barcelona hope to arrange a face-to-face meeting with Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gatzidis and manager Arsene Wenger in London this week to secure the transfer of Cesc Fabregas,’ says the Mail on Sunday, who repeat the notion that Barca are only willing to pay £35m and Arsenal want £45m for their captain. There has been much speculation about who Barcelona could sell to raise the funds to buy Fabregas, Alexis Sanchez and Guiseppe Rossi and one name that keeps coming into the mix is David Villa. He only signed for Barcelona last summer in a £35m deal but the Sunday Mirror now suggests they are willing to sell him to Manchester City for £40m. It sounds highly unlikely to us. Pop star Rihanna’s latest video, ‘Man Down’ has sparked a controversy involving explicitly violent and raunchy videos being broadcast on television, uncensored, as the Parents Television Council (PTC) appealed to the BET (Black Entertainment Television) network to ban the video. the video, premiered on BET last Tuesday, shows Rihanna murdering a man near a crowded railway station in what looks like a premeditated event. As the video progresses in flashback, Rihanna is seen sexually assaulted by the man outside a pub, from the point of view of the victim in a harrowing sequence.
