After Christina Aguilera butchered the national anthem at the Super Bowl, John Allen Albree of Columbus made some stinging comments expressing his disappointment in the quality of celebrity singers selected to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at major televised sporting events. but the crop of singers at this year’s World Series impressed him. “In all fairness, I think now is the time to recognize that the quality of these performers has improved to the point that excellence now seems to be the standard. I always appreciate those who follow the melody and the words as they were written and not try to improve upon the original,” he says. “My only criticism is that a huge percentage of our U.S. citizens seem to have no idea what to do with their right hand or their headgear during the playing of our national anthem. Someplace along the time of growing up, too many Americans failed to learn what is the proper respect for our flag and our anthem. this same observation applies to our athletes, both professional and amateur. Standing with their hands in their pockets and talking with their friends and teammates is not a sign of patriotic respect for our country.”
