Obviously it could be worse. We still have our Premier League status, thanks to the miracle of the last day of the season (Incidentally, how long ago does that seem now?), but it does seem like it’s going to be a long summer.
Former foreign minister Rohitha Bogollagama has sent us the following letter in response to our last week’s Café story titled ‘Diplomatic outlaws and illegitimate ads’.
The letter says:
I wish to respond to the above news item, though appearing more in the form of a "Gossip Column", with a view to correcting the false impressions this may cause in the Public eye.
There’s a scene in Sleepless in Seattle where Tom Hanks, whose libido has been dead in the water since his wife died, comes home from work to discover his young son hanging out with a friend in his room – and that’s a literal hanging out, as the two of them are cozy cuddling on one of those mod hanging chairs built for one. oh, did I forget to mention that the son’s friend is grrrl? One of those 9-going-on-24 types who seem to have waaaay too much information ‘bout the birds and the bees and who looks on grown-ups as burnt-out Muggies without a clue about the magic in the world and who you just have to tolerate because, well, that’s just the way life is.

When affluent families come together to celebrate the Fourth of July weekend, fights invariably break out over long-standing, emotional sensitivities. Relatives who are free to avoid each other for most of the year suddenly square off and spar, hoping to gain an advantage in long-term internecine struggles. What’s unusual about many of these battles is that instead of lining up properly and exchanging direct blows, well-fixed family members often clash by proxy—staging high-stakes competitions between members of their respective staffs.
Known as the original bad Boy of the Philippines’ movie industry, Robin Padilla earned the moniker largely for the tough guy roles he played in the movies, quite successfully.
Elders sure expressed themselves on how I should use my time A.O. (After Oprah, from last week’s column).
An 81-year-old said she had never wasted one single minute watching Oprah, and her advice to me is to get a life.

Look up “controversy” in the Jamaican dictionary and you might find a photo of Adidjah Palmer, a.k.a. dancehall star Vybz Kartel. the 35-year-old launched his career over a decade ago as a ghostwriter for Bounty Killer and has since dominated Jamaican airwaves with outré, tongue-twisting tunes about everything from X-rated antics to ghetto politics. He's dominated gossip columns, too, whether for his much-hyped feud with fellow dancehall deejay Mavado, which ended in a meeting at the Prime Minister's office; the name of his crew – Gaza, a name he also bestowed on the neighborhood outside Kingston in which he grew up; or his chameleon-like appearance: Kartel's ever-lightening skin has generated plenty of angst about so-called “skin bleaching” in Jamaican culture. On June 21st he releases Kingston Story (Mixpak Records), a collaboration with Brooklyn-based hip-hop/electro producer Dre Skull. the no-holds-barred artist talks music, business ventures and cultural politics with Rolling Stone.
The Daily Mail reports that Galatasaray will allow Arda Turan to join Chelsea for £7m but want Didier Drogba in return. the left winger has been the subject of recent transfer speculation and the club have been alerted to the player by former coach Guus Hiddink. it could also represent a last pay day for Didier Drogba as he prepares to end his stay at Stamford Bridge.

David Cameron wants us to give more to charity — an admirable goal most of us would endorse. Last week he talked of “nudging” the public into giving more by pressing a donation key at cash machines, or by rounding-up the total when we pay a bill. Critics say that Dave’s Big Society is doomed, but I’m not so cynical.

Arsenal forward Robin van Persie has moved quickly to deny the claims he questioned the professionalism of English footballers in the Premier League.
Until the early 1990s, cinema in India was restricted to the exclusive domain of film magazines, and any talk of stars would be personality-driven news of the sensational kind rather than the intricacies, dynamics or associated focus areas of film-making. Then the scene changed drastically, dramatically as the entire industry went through a rapid fire of self-innovation. Writing a post-script on this transformation is no child's play. it simple demands a deep understanding of the subject and perfect judgment. Anupama Chopra's First Day First Show is a collection of reviews and articles that not only goes into the conduct and performance of actors and their films, but also the craft and mechanics of Bollywood during the reign of the old guard and the arrival of the young Turks.
