Top 5: Dance Music Videos You Should Have Seen

Martin GH looks back at some classic dance videos.

Rock has lead guitarists, showmanship and instrumentation. Hip-hop b-boys and MCs with swagger.

in contrast what does house, techno, breakbeat or dubstep have? There’s talent in abundance, of course, but as so many TV appearances by acts that crossed over into mainstream dance have proven (time, and time again), there’s not that much of a visual aspect to the performance.

 The air that he breathes

“Don’t ever forget to put misery on the guest list,” intones Sean “Slug” Daley during “I Don’t Need Brighter Days,” one of the darker moments on Atmosphere‘s sixth album, The Family Sign. But while the Minneapolis hip-hop group’s frontman still doesn’t suffer this world lightly, he does seem to be breathing a bit easier of late, having traded the usual personal demons for a stable home-life free of what he describes as “self-inflicted struggles.”

Truth Hall and I have just finished our semi-regular routine: debating about some off-brand hip-hop album, then finding a place to rap within the vast Prince George’s County school.

Ah, Brooklyn. The pedestrian flavor of wildly varying culture, the brownstone housing and screeching of kamikaze cab wheels, the constant, faint scent of a nearby pizzeria… there’s nothing quite like the neighborhoods just south of Manhattan’s massive grid complex, home to a world of uniqueness and character.

When tracing the history of hip-hop, one will find anoverarching consensus among non-supporters that generally vilifiesthe genre. Between mass marketing of overindulgence and the media’shype of criminal behavior, mainstream’s tunnel vision of hip-hopculture has unfairly perpetuated a bad rap for this genre.

Like most kids growing up on the east coast during the ‘80s, I didn’t trust hip-hop coming out of anywhere South of new Jersey. Where we lived was where “real” hip-hop was being made, and the music coming out of Atlanta and Houston and Miami was so shallow we wouldn’t even call it hip-hop. (“That’s not hip-hop, that’s rap,” we’d say dismissively.”) But as I got older I realized that kind of geographic elitism didn’t just make me sound like a complete dick, it robbed me of some great music. From Scarface to Outkast to UGK and everyone in between, the South, as dirty as it might be, was home to some serious artists. The surface may sometime be shallow, but look deeper and you’ll discover some real depth.

As original members of the hip-hop collective Native Tongues, the three members of A Tribe Called Quest, Phife Dawg, Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, were part of an iconic movement in the history of the genre, they were important figures in the entirety of the medium. in fact, their first three albums broke creative ground and breached commercial success on such a massive scale that their disharmony and dissolution almost seemed like an inevitability.

1309709615 35 Church hosts Zumba dance class

Hawley Methodist Church located at 315 Church Street in Hawley has announced that they will be hosting Zumba and Zumba Gold classes beginning Friday, July 8.   Maintaining fitness is no easy task for so many, and finding a fitness activity that is enjoyable is key.  Zumbai s a Latin-inspired dance class that takes the emphasis off of exercise and places it instead on having fun and enjoying the intense rhythms of the music.  while about 70 percent of the music is Latin, the rest is a mix of world rhythms such as African and Bhangraas well as hip hop and pop music.  nothing like your usual fitness class, Zumba is a virtual dance party that is a truly exhilarating experience and torches up to 1000 calories per session. Zumba Gold classes are excellent for beginners or seniors that want to start off at a slightly slower pace, offering more opportunity to learn the moves while still having a great time. The classes will be taught by Magdalene Casola, a certified Zumba instructor who studied dance for over a decade with the venerated Istvan Rabovsky of new York. In addition, Ms. Casolais certified in various disciplines of fitness, including Yoga, Pilates and Group Fitness.    Classes are open to the  public and will take place on Friday mornings at the Church.  four classes cost $30.  E-mail the instructor directly with any questions at NEPAZUMBA@aol.com, or call (570)775-6062.
