BENNINGTON — Bennington’s “Corkscrew Division” is the focus in the final volume of a documentary series exploring the lines of the now-defunct Rutland Railway.

The six-part series, “Rutland Remnants,” is a trip through history and Vermont that chronicles the rail system which once brought dairy to new York City, and passengers through Bennington County.

1322827375 16 December Lit Events

Tuesday, Dec. 6 among the professionally outraged talking-head set, “Kool-Aid drinker” has become shorthand for “anyone who subscribes to beliefs different than those I am paid to espouse.” The phrase implies a gullible zealotry on the part of the believers and an evil, messianic cunning on that of the believed-in. It’s a public service, then, that Julia Scheeres has written A Thousand Lives to remind us of the horror and humanity of the actual Kool-Aid moment: when, at the behest of Jim Jones, 900 Americans drank a cyanide-laced fruit punch, many at gunpoint — under a duress that belies that awful shorthand. Scheeres fills in the story’s human heart, showing us how regular people came to the Peoples Temple at 1859 Geary and then to the jungles of Guayana — and how Jones’ intimidation techniques kept them from leaving. Soul by soul, detail by detail, Scheeres lays bare the small tragedies that accumulated into the larger one. She discusses the book today at the Booksmith, 1644 Haight (at Belvedere), S.F. 7:30 p.m., free; call 863-8688 or visit www.booksmith.com.

1322708575 67 Interview: On The Road With Asher Roth

It’s been almost three years since Asher Roth took the frat rap world by storm with his beer pong anthem “I Love College.” and though his debut album Asleep In the Bread Aisle didn’t sell an insane amount of copies, he built up an extremely loyal following of fans across the country and overseas, largely on the strength of the passion displayed in his live shows.

1321325903 45 Lame Colts fall to 0 10

The struggles continue for the Colts.   The defense played better, but the offense remained stagnant in a 17-3 loss to the Jaguars on Sunday in Indianapolis. Indy was held to three points for the first time in the regular season since 1997 as it dropped to 0-10.   The Colts benched quarterback Curtis Painter for Dan Orlovsky in the fourth quarter after he threw his second interception, and coach Jim Caldwell wouldn’t offer a vote of confidence heading into a bye week.   “He was a bit unsettled, maybe, on drives, and I just made a change to see if we can get a spark,” Caldwell said. “But we’ll evaluate that, take a look at it and see where we go from here.” Maurice Jones-Drew ran for 114 yards and a score, leading Jacksonville to its first road victory of the season. his game-sealing, 3-yard TD run capped an 8-yard scoring drive that was set up by Orlovsky’s fumble.   The Colts have lost as many regular-season home games this season as they did in the previous three seasons combined and were eliminated from the AFC South title chase when Houston beat Tampa Bay.   with two of the league’s worst offenses on the field, the game lived up to its inept billing. Painter and Jags rookie QB Blaine Gabbert each threw interceptions in the first five plays. And of the 61 first-half plays, 35 went for 2 or fewer yards. Saints 26, Falcons 23 (OT) John Kasay kicked a 26-yard field goal in overtime after Atlanta coach Mike Smith’s decision to go for it on fourth down deep in his own territory backfired horribly and handed the victory to New Orleans at the Georgia Dome.   “I know it will be scrutinized all week long,” Smith said. “I want everybody to understand I take full responsibility.” The home team rallied from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter, tying it on Matt Bryant’s 27-yard field goal on the final play of regulation. In overtime, Atlanta appeared to pick up a first down on a pass to Mike Cox, but he was ruled just short after replay. then, stunningly, Smith decided to go for it on fourth down from his own 29.   Michael Turner was stuffed. Game over.  “I just saw a guy in my face as soon as I got the ball,” Turner said. Saints QB Drew Brees went 30-of-43 for 322 yards, including a pair of touchdowns. Marques Colston had eight catches for 113 yards. Ryan threw a staggering 52 passes, completing 29 for 351 yards and two touchdowns. Harry Douglas finished with eight receptions for 133 yards.   49ers 27, Giants 20 Justin Smith batted down Eli Manning’s pass in the closing seconds and San Francisco stopped New York on fourth down to seal the home victory.   with his team trailing, Manning completed a pair of long fourth-down passes and got the Giants to the red zone with 1:53 to go. But Smith thwarted the final chance with a giant smack on fourth-and-2 from the 10. Vernon Davis leaped from the 4-yard line over safety Kenny Phillips into the end zone to complete a go-ahead 31-yard touchdown catch early in the fourth quarter. Kendall Hunter ran for a 27-yard TD in the fourth, moments after Carlos Rogers’ second pick of the day for he Niners.   David Akers kicked four field goals, setting up one with a surprise onside kick, for the 49ers at Candlestick Park.   it was a day of defense. San Francisco had 77 total yards rushing to 93 for New York. The first half featured seven possessions, five field goals and no punts.   Cardinals 21, Eagles 17 John Skelton threw a 5-yard TD pass to Early Doucet with 1:53 left to rally Arizona, which snapped an 11-game road losing streak with the win in Philadelphia.   Starting for the injured Kevin Kolb, Skelton threw three touchdown passes, two to Larry Fitzgerald, who made a sensational, over-the-shoulder diving catch to set up the go-ahead score in the fourth. The Eagles, on the other hand, blew a fourth-quarter lead for the fifth time this season and have lost seven of their past eight home games. Steelers 24, Bengals 17 Rashard Mendenhall ran for a pair of touchdowns and Pittsburgh sacked Andy Dalton twice in the fourth quarter in Cincinnati. Mendenhall, once of Illinois, scored on a 9-yard run that put the Steelers’ up 24-17 late in the third. Dalton had two more touchdown passes, giving him 14 overall — the most by a rookie quarterback in his first nine games since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. He wasn’t sacked even though the Steelers blitzed all day. But cornerback William Gay stepped in front of Dalton’s throw to Jerome Simpson for a clinching interception inside the Pittsburgh 20-yard line with 2:27 left.   Patriots 37, Jets 16 Tom Brady threw three touchdown passes for New England, including two to Rob Gronkowski, in East Rutherford, N.J. after New York got within a score at 23-16 early in the fourth quarter, Brady coolly led the Pats down the field on an 84-yard drive that was capped by an 8-yard TD catch by Deion Branch. New England linebacker Rob Ninkovich sealed the victory — which snapped a two-game skid — on the Jets’ next possession with a 12-yard interception return for a touchdown midway through the final quarter.   ELSEWHERE … Tony Romo guided the Cowboys to touchdown drives on his first four series, and Terence Newman returned one of his two interceptions for a score in a 44-7 win over the Bills in Arlington, Texas. Romo hit his first 13 attempts, finished 23-of-26 and hooked up for TDs of 58 and 5 yards to Illinois State product Laurent Robinson. … Tim Tebow hit Eric Decker on a 56-yard TD pass, one of his only two completions, helping the Broncos to a 17-10 win over the Chiefs in Kansas City, Mo. … Reggie Bush scored two TDs and the Dolphins intercepted Rex Grossman twice to earn their first home victory in nearly a year by beating the Redskins, 20-9 in Miami. … The Titans sacked Cam Newton five times, intercepted him once and held Steve Smith, the NFC’s leading receiver, to 33 yards in a 30-3 win in Charlotte, N.C. Chris Johnson ran for 130 yards and a score. … Matt Schaub threw for two long touchdowns — Jacoby Jones converted an 80-yarder on the first play from scrimmage — and Arian Foster, Ben Tate and Derrick Ward each ran for scores for the Texans in a 37-9 win over the Buccaneers in Tampa, Fla. Foster also turned a short pass into his second 78-yard scoring reception of the season for Houston. … Steven Hauschka hit five field goals, Marshawn Lynch scored on a 1-yard plunge and the Seahawks forced three turnovers in a surprising 22-17 win over the Ravens in Seattle.

BEREA — I have nothing to report on local golf action as the Rally for the Cure Scramble at the Pioneer Golf Club (BGAD) was postponed until next Saturday because of cold weather. However, I received an interesting e-mail from my good friend Jim Stull several weeks ago that I certainly feel all golfers and Americans should be made aware. Jim had a friend, Lamar Jones, who had teed it up on the Lake Buena Vista Golf Course at Disney World in Florida. the starter had paired him up with three other players to make up a foursome. as the round progressed Lamar began to get acquainted with the three other players. one fellow was rather young and had his wife riding along in the cart with him. Lamar noticed that his new golf bag and clubs had his name, Ben Woods, on it and the inscription “Wounded Veteran.” over a few holes, Lamar learned Ben had spent 15 months in an Army rehabilitation hospital in San Antonio, Texas. his wife moved there to be with him and he was released from the hospital in September.  when Lamar asked about the new irons and woods Ben said they were a gift and this was the first full round he had played with them. later in the round Lamar found out the following. as part of the discharge process from the hospital, Ping comes in and provides three days of golf instruction, followed by club fitting. upon discharge from the hospital Ping gives each of the discharged veterans (generally about 40 soldiers) a brand new set of custom-fitted clubs along with the impressive golf bags. Wow! Ben Woods looked Lamar Jones in the eye and said being fitted for those clubs was one of the best things that ever happened to him and he was determined to learn to play golf well enough to deserve the gift Ping had given him. Ben is now out of the service with a medical discharge. Lamar says he is as fine a young man as you would ever want to meet. the Ping Corporation has never tooted its own horn about this wonderful tribute to our wounded vets. My hat is off to Ping and CEO John Solheim for the big-hearted gesture. This is a company with heart. Special thanks to Jim Stull and Lamar Jones for this special report.

1320335877 94 Berkeley author explores the tragedy of Jonestown

Berkeley author Julia Scheeres

Julia Scheeres was only eleven in 1978 when 918 people in Jonestown committed mass suicide. She learned of the episode when she spotted her family’s copies of Time and Newsweek, both of which featured cover photos of bloated bodies rotting in the jungle. Scheeres’ parents quickly realized the images were not appropriate for young children and spirited away the magazines.

1320173902 29 JIm Hillibish: Search of ‘net’ finds interesting Hillibishes

Every so often, when you’re totally bored to death, type your last name into a search engine. Those of you with names such as Jones or Smith will need to narrow the search. Google has 196 million Smiths and 942 million Joneses. think of the reunion picnics. if you suffer an oddball name such as mine, you’re lucky. Whatever, cool stuff awaits your search. I thought my family name was near extinction. then I found a handful of us in Pennsylvania, relations too distant for Christmas cards. none appear incarcerated, a relief. the only connection among us is firefighting, even those who married into the family. Joe Hillibish in 1870 was assistant chief of the Logan Volunteer fire co. in Bellfonte, Pa. Frank Hillibish (same name as my grandfather) was his plug man, along with Bill Hillibish. my great-grandfather, great uncle, grandfather and father were firefighters at one time or another. the local newspaper reported Joe and Frank had a “screaming session” over whether to call their fire department Logan or Victory (the Civil War had just ended). Hey, boys, why not Hillibish? the same paper reported that Frank and Joe put up “the first gaslight sign on their mammoth store. it is worth going to see.” my pride shows. Nick Hillibish “on the Friday before July 11, 1861, awoke at 3 a.m. to two men hammering each other in fine style on his sidewalk. Nick stopped the winner from crushing the head of the other with a large stone. They then went down the road to the Burnt Mill, where the conversation with fists resumed. “some surgical operations were required.” You’ll find a ton of genealogy on the “Net.” here you can trace the evolution of your family name. for mine, it goes Hallerbush, Hilibisch, Hilbush, Hillbush, Hilbish, Hillibish. the first one was Hallowbush, our only holy bush. Our family’s branch is down to one, me. I chanced upon Earl Hillibish, another volunteer firefighter, with Friendship Hose co. No. 1 in Orwigsburg, Pa.   on June 2, 1959, Earl, age 77, was fighting a propane tanker fire near the Red Church. the tanker exploded, killing him and one other firefighter. A truck containing 7,000 gallons of propane wrecked between two school buses carrying 85 children. Earl and his crew first saved the kids. when the tank blew, they were thrown into a police car. Their names are on a stone at the fire training school near Frackville. Age 77 and fighting fires. Sounds like a Hillibish. I feel like I know old Earl, and I am proud of him. so get busy searching your name. it could change the way you think about your family, hopefully for the better.
