FOR COLORED GIRLS – the film adaptation of Ntozake Shange’s 1975 Obie Award-winning play, for Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide when The Rainbow is Enuf – will open in the US on November 5th 2010. no doubt to a thunderous level of buzz, as is the hallmark for film director and writer Tyler Perry (Diary Of A Mad Black Woman, Why Did I Get Married?). Not just because the all-woman lead cast is as A-list as black Hollywood gets. But also because the music from and inspired by the film, compellingly emotive, does such a novel thing by placing some of modern soul and R&B music’s forerunners and its latter day torch bearers side by side one another, all of them performing brand new and unreleased tracks. Included in the line up are Nina Simone, Estelle, Janelle Monàe, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Lalah Hathaway andSouth African singer Zaki Ibrahim, on whom the significance of sharing such company is not lost. Says Zaki enthusiastically, “I’m excited and a bit geeked that I get to be in line with such amazing musicians and legends. Nina Simone has always been an inspiration. Janelle Monàe is playing some of my favorite music right now and Gladys Knight is a queen forever in my books.
