Stand-up Comedian Katt Williams has apologized to anyone who perceived his comments on the Mexican community as xenophobic. but he has refused to ask forgiveness for whatever he said on the stage and believes that he said nothing out of order.
Speaking in a sit-down with CNN, Williams said, “I meant what I said and I said what I meant.”
He believes that as a man of comedy, he should not apologize for anything he says during his performances as not everything the fans hear or see on stage represents the artists’ true feelings.
He brought up the example of comedian Tracy Morgan, who was forced apologise for his on-stage anti-gay comments and said “that’s for the Tracy Morgans of the world.”
The “Friday After Next” star then revealed that his earlier-released open apology for his comments wasn’t actually his own idea. instead, his publicist wrote it on his behalf and dispatched it to media outlets.
The incident in question is about a video in which Williams can be seen lambasting one of the members of his audience. he said that the fan started the whole row by passing derogatory comments about the United States.
Williams wasn’t open to letting his country getting insulted in his own show, so he fired back, “No this ain’t Mexico. It used to be Mexico [expletive] and now it’s Phoenix.”
On several occasions during the argument, the comedian chanted “USA! USA! USA!,” which he claims was an act of patriotism but activists believe it was insulting.
In his defence, Williams said, “I don’t think I need to apologize for being pro-American.”
At one point in the stand-up show, Williams had also said, “do you remember when white people used to say ‘go back to Africa,’ and we’d have to tell them we don’t want to? so if you love Mexico, (expletive), get the (expletive) over there!”
But now, the controversial funny man explains: “I couldn’t be anti-Mexican. My Mexican fan base is largely responsible or me even existing,” Williams said. “between them and the black community, it’s really all I have.”
