Ke$ha’s new song “We R Who We R” is meant to honor LGBTQ youth, The Advocate reports:
Ke$ha has a new single coming out soon, and it should be weightier than her usual tunes about drinking and partying.
“We R Who We R,” the lead single off her new mini-album, Cannibal, which comes out in November, is an ode to bullied gay teenagers.
“I wanted to inspire people,” Ke$ha has said. “It’s a celebration of any sort of quirks or eccentricities.”
Ke$ha, whose album Animal was a big hit this year, has spoken in the past of being bisexual.
But many commenting on The Advocate‘s site seem skeptical. Ke$ha may not be brushing her teeth with Jack Daniels in this one, but the song is clearly a party anthem, with references to “running this town just like a club” and “dancing like we’re dumb.”
Still, for all the glitter, ripped stockings and “hittin’ on dudes,” there is a potentially redeeming undercurrent of “fuck what they say — life may be tough but we’re going to celebrate anyway.” near the end of the song, Ke$ha alludes to these tough times, singing “we’re sellin’ our clothes, sleepin’ in cars.”
While the song may not resonate for those too young or poor or far removed from a city center to live it up in the way she describes, we’re willing to accept the “keep your chin up” message nestled among images of hot-shit party people. Let’s be real. It’s Ke$ha we’re talking about.
