Young people are taking to crazy wears which they insist is great fun
Aderonke Adedeji, a Mass Communication student in University of Lagos, loves dressing outrageously because it makes her look flamboyant. “I stand out in them and it also makes me look and feel like a celebrity,” she said. Looking outrageous is the new style in vogue in Nigeria as people would go the extra mile to look like their favourite celebrities.
Many youths are not left out of this trend. They find it fascinating, and it has become noticeable in their outfits, hair styles and make up. Chinasa Okoye, the proprietor of Sleek Look Saloon, is a woman who makes her living from the sale and service of coloured hair attachments that people, especially women, attach to their hair. She does not see what people buy from her as outrageous though. rather, she views her business as an aid to society, as she believes that it assists people to create the image of themselves that others admire. “though normal hairstyles such as rubber, wool, and weaving with the natural hair are cheaper, people still prefer to spend more money on the addition of outrageous hair extensions to their natural endowments.” Students in higher institutions seem to be fast gaining interest in this trend as they are often found wearing flamboyant hairstyles, loud make-ups, skinny jeans, panty hose and leggings.
Celebrities and well known personalities in Nigeria also influence this youth fashion trend. Entertainers like Charly Boy, Derenle Edun and Muma Gee are well known for wearing unusual outfits which have become their trademark. In Hollywood, celebrities like Lady Gaga and Lil Wayne are also known for the unusual way they dress. these celebrities have branded themselves this way to keep their fans guessing on what they would put on next.
Adepoju Olawale, a runway model said, “ I love the crazy fashion trend for its friendliness to mankind. It gives people the ability to be themselves, and whatever trend is released, I always love to be seen in it,” he said, adding, “ looking crazy is fun to me.”
Adebayo Adenike, a fashion designer likes the trend because, “fashion is one thing that is constant. It is comparable to the word “change” which is inevitable in the lives of individuals. so is fashion. Fashion comes and goes, therefore, it has to be something new each time a new trend is released.” Adenike said wearing such outlandish outfits is not meant for everyone so people should wear what best suits them. They should also co-ordinate their colours well because the extent to which clothes are combined would go a long way to speak for or against them. “Still, if they like it they would go for it and we fashion designers are after satisfying our customers,” she said.
Omobola Akinpelu, a hairstylist based in Lagos, said the crazy styles are gotten mainly from foreign magazines. we show our customers the styles in vogue and if they are fine with them, it is our duty to give them what they want,” she said.
But there are those who are not comfortable with this outrageous change in fashion. They see it as a deviation from the African culture. Opeyemi Onasanya, a student in Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, said she is not comfortable with the new trend, as it has encouraged indecency among youth.
Sekinat Abdullahi, a trader in Yaba, who is from a Muslim background, condemns it from a religious viewpoint, “It is not acceptable for a lady from a Muslim background to uncover her hair, let alone be seen in crazy hairstyles and outfits,” she said.
Matthew Zachariah, a clinical psychology consultant in Lagos State University College of Medicine, argued that the multi-coloured artificial trend of today is simply an evolution, a change from the past, where the main purpose is to attract. “In the past, they used what was available to them and now with the world as a global village, the media, especially television has made available various choices.”
