Really Though? I don’t think courtship is gone in R&B music—while I do agree that there has been an increase in sexual music—but that’s in any genre NOT just R&B!!
You’re talking about Miguel’s song Quickie but what about ‘Sure Thing’? sure thing was actually a bigger hit than Quickie was!! and ‘Sure Thing’ is a song about a man being in love with a woman and him ***uring her that he isn’t going anywhere b/c their love is a “sure thing”. and what about “Fool For YOu” by Cee-Lo Green and Melanie Fiona?? big Song this year. Then there are “Pieces of Me” by Ledisi—a song about a woman who wants her man to accept who she is as a woman and what she can bring to their relationship. what about “Countdown” by Beyonce—a song about love lasting over time (although it’s a fast song). “You Da One” just came out by Rihanna, which is a love song. what about 24/8 by Mary J. Blige?? mr. Wrong by her also (alhthough it’s about a man she wants to leave—it’s a love song nonetheless). what about Marsha Ambrosious? Melanie Fiona? They all sing love songs. also, I’d like to add that what they play on the radio is not a representation of the amount of R&B music out there. the radio generally keeps the same 20 songs in rotation. Those are big hits and big songs with ppl who have big money to pay the radio stations to play their stuff.
An example is the artist Frank Ocean. He’s growing in popularity but he is mostly an underground R&B artists. he has love songs like. look up his R&B mixtape called the “The Collections of Lonny Breaux”. It’s a 64 SONG MIXTAPE FULL OF LOVE SONGS! Then cop his latset mixtape “Nostalgia Ultra”. It’s love songs are: American Wedding, Novocane (abt a girl’s love being addictive), Songs For Women, Strawberry Swing, Love Crime. FULL OF R&B. There is soulful, love-based R&B out there. It just doesn’t get radio attention.

I can so relate to this. this is the very reason why I want to be a songwriter and pursue my singing. what artist push out now is crap and I stopped listening to the radio station years ago. the IPOD is a god send.
