Odd Future rapper Syd the Kyd recently teamed up with Matt Martians to release the album Purple Naked Ladies under their moniker, The Internet. In the video for the group’s single “Cocaine,” Syd is open about her sexuality, going out on a date with a girl, even kissing for the cameras. This week, Syd appeared on the cover of LA Weekly and in excerpts from the interview, she talks about being gay in hip-hop, even calling out Alicia Keys and Missy Elliott as closeted entertainers.
Her reason for “coming out” in “Cocaine”: “I decided to do it because I wish I had someone like that [an openly gay female artist] while I was coming up. People write on my Tumblr just thanking me for making the video, saying that I really inspire them, and they want to be like me. but I wasn’t always this way, this comfortable with myself, and I remember what that was like. So I figure, f— it. Everyday people aren’t given this opportunity and I realize that. and I didn’t at first. I thought I was just lucky to be along for the ride.”
On other gay entertainers: “There’s Alicia Keys, who’s married to Swizz Beatz – we know that s— ain’t real. you got Queen Latifah kissing Common in movies. Missy Elliott saying she don’t wanna hang with bitches. you know she loves her some bitches.”
