will Vaught earned $6,500 over the weekend in sweeping the late model Topless Thunderfest at the Thunderbird Speedway in Muskogee, Okla. Crane’s Vaught, who has relatives in Joplin, won the a feature worth $3,000 and sanctioned by the MARS DIRTcar Series on Saturday night at the 1/2-mile dirt track. the main event win on Friday night was worth $2,500. the sweep netted Vaught, whose sponsors include Circle M Auto Sales of Joplin, an extra $1,000. Vaught, who turns 25 on Oct. 13, defeated Brad Looney of Republic, R.C. Whitwell of Tucson (Ariz.), Jack Sullivan of Greenbrier (Ark.) and pole sitter Jesse Stovall of Galena (Mo.) on Saturday. Vaught, Looney and Stovall were the top three finishers in the main event on Friday. Looney leads Stovall 1,513-1,476 entering Saturday’s program at Springfield Raceway. Whitwell (1,344), Tony Jackson Jr. (1,274) of Lebanon and 2010 champion Terry Phillips (1,226) of Springfield complete top five in season points. Stovall recently won the Rockabilly 45, with Vaught placing third, at Northeast Arkansas Speedway in Harrisburg, Ark. Stovall earned $5,000 in the COMP Cams Super Dirt Series event. Springfield Raceway SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Track owners Jerry Hoffman of Oronogo and Doug Bland of Springfield announced last week that USRA modified national points will be given during Saturday’s Larry Phillips Memorial and the Bordertown Casino Octoberfast on Oct. 15. First place in the modified main event this week will be worth $500. making the start is worth $100. the modified stakes for Oct. 15 are being finalized, according to track publicist Ronnie Williams. the modified version of the event last season paid $1,111 to win and $275 to start. Webb City’s Scott Drake won the modified a feature in 2010. More than 30 modified drivers made the event. Midway Speedway LEBANON, Mo. — Missouri Legends will continue as weekly fare on the Friday 8 p.m. programs. Joplin’s Dave Comer, this year’s points champion at Springfield Raceway, won last week’s Legends main event at Midway. it actually was the Legends’ second appearance at Midway and Joplin’s Park Jones bagged that a feature. this week’s open show also will offer modified, factory stock, street stock, pure stock and Midwest Modz classes. the track will hold its seventh annual Coca-Cola Fall Brawl on Oct. 7-8.
