Alicia hits a different note…
Alicia Keys has gone on the record as saying the government created “gangsta rap” to “convince black people to kill each other.” Wow…now thats taking a stand. I don’t agree with her because I believe gangsta’ music was created out of poverty just as gangs were. But, I’m so glad to see an artist make a statement based on their beliefs. So many artist are too afraid to speak from the heart.
Most importantly, I want to know why it took an R&B singer to bring “real talk” back to hiphop…what does that say about our rappers.
Print This Post R&B
The reason it took an R&B Artist to bring real talk back to hip hop is because she probably feels that she is hip-hop. The music is really no longer separated into visible genres because there are so many styles blending together now. Most “hip-hop” music today falls between R&B, Pop, and Rap. We’re confused because the artists are confused. Just like you said, how does Soldier Boy Tellem win hip-hop album or song of the year. That **** could be in the dance category, or listed with children’s music competing with the likes of Hannah Montana. His music is relevant and catchy enough to win an award, especially based off of his initial work ethic promoting through U-Tube, but not hip-hop.. NO WAY!!
Hmmm….the artist are confused…lol…thats funny and so true. I don’t even want to get on the Soulja Boi subject because he represents the corporate takeover of rap and hiphop.
Yea….I’m bitter
Well, I don’t believe gangsta rap came from the gov’t, but I do believe that the gov’t turned the other way when it suspiciously encouraged violence among certain groups and specific individuals. I don’t think their turning the other way anymore, now that they have the an FBI dept dedicated to monitoring it.
When it comes to gangsta’ anything I don’t blame the government. I blame them for enough stuff, but I blame our people for this one. Point blank period but I respect Alicia for taking a second. Stand my sister, and she may not be right on the money, but she’s prvoking thought that will lead to being right on the money. The main thing is that she senses a problem. And the rap artists? Well, they aren’t standing for anything because they’re the ones promoting gangs and whatnot.
