India Arie… ‘I was emotionally unwell’
R&B/soul singer India Arie says the break between her two most recent albums was due to unhealthy elements surrounding her life.
Says Arie, “I was emotionally unwell and also tired of the challenge of fitting into someone else’s paradigm of a black artist. I really needed to take care of myself.”
Arie’s desire to be free also led to her creating her own record label entitled Soulbird, which is distributed through Republic.
The singer is now able to focus more on her artistry and less on the politics of the business. At the same time however, Arie does admits “that pressure is there,” referring to albums sales.
“I’m all about feeling, and this album is 99 percent uncompromised in that way.” India Arie’s highly anticipated album “Testimony Vol.2, Love & Politics” hits stores and digital retailers Feb. 10.
We are glad to see her back so check out the new single featuring Music Soul entitled “Chocolate High”.
