Jermaine Dupri’s departure from Island Records…’the real reason’
Co-workers criticize the producers work ethic.
After Jermaine Dupri spoke publicly with Essence magazine in defense of his removal from Island Records as the executive in charge of talent development; several Island Records A&R reps felt compelled to tell “the real reason” Dupri was let go.
“Basically he’s lazy. He never had intentions of breaking new artist, but instead he put all his eggs in one basket…the Janet Jackson basket; and it crashed”, said one Rep.
Reportedly, the A&R reps would submit material on potential prospects, but Dupri would ignore or disregard their recommendations. “He would say things like ‘he’s too much like such and such’ or ‘Lets try to find some one more original. I initially thought it was just me until we all realized that he was pitching the same curve ball to everybody.”
Said one Label executive, “He still collected a paycheck, but didn’t bother to do anything that he was supposed to do, like find artists, release records or actually show up.”
Of course there are always at least two sides to a story, and according to Dupri, “It was a situation where it felt very stagnant to me. As a person who is used to putting out new records and continuing to do that, it just wasn’t turning over as being that place to me where I should stick to it and see if it was going to turn around”.
