OJ Simpson

O.J. SIMPSON’s legal team is pleading with Nevada officials to release the former football star on bail as he appeals his conviction on armed robbery charges.

Simpson was sentenced to serve at least 15 years in prison last December after his conviction relating to a September 2007 sports memorabilia heist.

The retired sportsman lodged an appeal in May, claiming judicial misconduct, a lack of racial diversity on the jury and errors in sentencing and jury instructions.

And now Simpson has made a bid for freedom as his appeal is considered.

His lawyer Yale Galanter asked the Nevada Supreme Court on Monday to release Simpson on bail, arguing that his client is "not a flight risk" and would not leave the U.S.

Galanter adds, "Mr Simpson is unique in the history of American jurisprudence. He is probably the one individual who has no place to go and no place to hide."

The three-judge panel is not expected to make a ruling for several weeks.
